Teams of residents and business people came together to walk in the fight against cancer during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, a 24-hour event that began at 9 a.m. Saturday and ended at 9 a.m. Sunday at Johnny Carson Park.

Larry Rangel, left, of Santa Clarita, and Henry Gross of Burbank walks in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Johnny Carson Park in Burbank.
The walk continues for 24 hours because cancer never sleeps, said Daniela Barragan, Relay for Life manager, who is based in the American Cancer Society’s Burbank office.

“This event celebrates three things, honoring cancer survivors, remembering those we have lost and fighting back against the disease,” she said.

The Burbank walk was organized by volunteer co-chairmen Nate Frey and Michelle Jacobovitz and 22 committee members. More than 700 people registered. Each year more than 300 events like this are held across the state and 5,000 events are held throughout the country, Barragan said.

Part of fighting back is raising funds and awareness, Barragan added. The funds raised from the Relay go to cancer research and free services, like free wigs for chemo-therapy patients and rides to
treatment. Several booths set up along the route were sharing information on the importance of wearing sun block, eating more vegetables and getting tests for early detection ~ the best way to win
the battle against cancer.

Among the teams walking were Chad’s Champions, in support of Chad Becken, 37, who is fighting colorectal cancer; and Dan the Man team, honoring the memory of Dan Linegar, founder of the Burbank Relay event, who passed away from esophageal cancer in November.

What Chad Becken’s illness proves is that colon cancer isn’t only contracted by older people, said his mother Susie Becken. People in their 20s and 30s should start getting tested for colorectal cancer,
especially if there is a history of cancer in the family.

“A simple colon test can save your life!” she said.

Veronica Hudson, cancer research coordinator at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, looks at the handprints and names of cancer survivors during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life on May 12, 2012, at Johnny Carson Park in Burbank.
A special tribute in honor of Dan Linegar was held during the luminaria ceremony on Saturday evening. More than 500 illuminated paper bags lined the park, in the names of survivors and those who had passed away.

Linegar was a huge supporter of Burbank Temporary Aid Center and ran its Santa’s Room for five years, said Victoria Sands of Burbank.

“I feel this event is his legacy,” she said.

A group from the Burbank High School Key Club, a young adult branch of Kiwanis, was getting the luminaries ready for the ceremony. Participating were Micaela Kingman, 16; Khushbu Patel, 15; Ashley Garber, 16; Ellie Hirahara, 16; Karishma Patel, 15; and Jacob Salomon, 15.

Ellie was volunteering at the event for the second year, she said. She has family members who have survived and passed away from cancer.

“The candlelight ceremony is touching,” she said. “Helping out is really amazing! It’s a good feeling!”

A section of the park had a display of white quilts decorated with multi-colored handprints of survivors. Veronica Hudson, cancer research coordinator at the Roy Disney Family Cancer Center in Burbank, knew many of the names.

“Seeing these patients’ names ~ it’s incredible!” she said. “They are so strong. They just keep fighting.”

For questions about cancer, live representatives can be reached 24 hours a day at (800) ACS-2345. Seven languages are spoken.

Shortstop Sparks Early Offense For Bulldogs in Win

MCCAMBRIDGE — Shortstop Laina Do was moved to the three-spot in the order for May 15′s CIF Southern Section Division II wildcard game against Arroyo Grande.

It was one of the few occasions this season where Do found herself out of her more familiar clean-up or five spots, but it may not be the last time she is moved-up in the postseason in an effort to secure an extra at bat over the course of a seven inning game.

She delivered a RBI single in the first to help Burbank draw first blood. She added another RBI single in the second inning to cap a three-run inning to lead the Bulldogs to a 6-1 win.

Do also reached base a third time and stole a pair of bases for good measure. Teammate Caitlyn Brooks surrendered only one run, scattering eight hits and enducing a pair of crucial double plays to escape some early jams. She earned her 14th win of the season.

The win was one of Burbank’s most impressive of the season, striking early and often against Arroyo Grande’s ace, Jillian Compton, who is committed to Fresno State next year.

The Eagles finish their season 18-10, Burbank improves to 21-6. The Bulldogs will play La Reina on Tuesday, a team it destroyed 8-0 in the season’s early going. La Reina fell to Burbank back in April before finding its game in Tri-Valley League play to earn a piece of the league championship. Burbank finished second in the Pacific League, but drew the third seed after losing a runs tie-breaker to Crescenta Valley.

With the wildcard win under their belts, the Bulldogs might now view that tiebreaker as a blessing more than a curse, as the young team found their A-game Tuessday and put a tough extra inning loss to Burroughs on May 11 behind them.

Bulldogs drop CIF Southern Section Division II playoff opener at Claremont to end successful season.

CLAREMONT — Members of the Burbank High baseball team weren’t even born the last time the Bulldogs were relevant enough to be competing for a league champioship on the season’s final date.

So despite a disappointing final few days to the 2012 season, the Bulldogs take some comfort in a season of growth and progress which ended Tuesday, May 15 with a 6-1 loss at Claremont High School in a CIF Southern Section Division II wildcard game.

“Really, it sounds like coach’s speak but I am pleased with the steps we took this year,” Coach Bob Hart said late Tuesday. “Our handful of seniors really pass the baton off in style with their work both on and off the field, from the way they carried themselves at practice each day to the way they took care of business in the classroom — these guys were the types of players you would be proud to call a son. It will be a banquet to look forward for sure.

“We also return a pretty solid young nucleus, so I am excited with what we have to look forward to as well,” Hart added.

One of the seniors, Paul Frias, staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead at Claremont with a solo home run. It would be the only run the Bulldogs would muster off of the Wolfpack’s ace, Kenny Chapman.

Starting pitcher Andrew Hernandez was effective through five before running into some trouble late and leaving in the sixth inning trailing 4-1. A pair of relievers failed to keep the game close as Claremont opened-up a five run lead in the inning en route to the win.

“Andrew pitched much better than the final score would indicate and frankly the game was much closer that that,” Hart said. “I felt like it was one of those games where something was going to give and unfortunately it was us.”

Burbank finished the season 13-10 overall and 10-4 in league following a 2-0 loss to Burroughs last week in the season finale. Its 13 wins and second place finish are both the best showings for the Bulldogs in 20 years.

Goldsack is sharp on the mound but Indians' offense is MIA in loss to Ventura

Burroughs Coach Kiel Holmes took a risk, one he called “a calculated gamble,” and one of his seniors delivered. Unfortunately, his offense could not deliver more than a single run as the first year coach saw his team drop its CIF Southern Section Division II playoff opener, 4-1, at Ventura High School.

Left-handed pitcher Dylan Goldsack, usually a reliver, made only his second start of the season based on a scouting report Holmes had gathered in the 24 hours since learning his team would see the Cougars. Goldsack was brillant, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing only an unearned run.

However, reliever Zane Carey ran into trouble in the seventh inning and ultimately surrendered a three-run walk-off home run off the bat of Jarek York to break a 1-1 tie.

“Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about either pitcher — they were great,” Holmes said. “Unfortunately we didn’t support them with any offense and even worse we made some costly physical and mental errors behind them as well.”

Goldsack sailed through his first five innings and had a one-run lead heading into the sixth following Christian Garia’s RBI double in the fifth. Holmes said he was not surprised Goldsack made good on his chance to start.

“The kid is a gamer, I was very proud of the way he performed,” Holmes said.

Carey relieved him in the sixth inning and after Ventura squeezed home a run he escaped a bases loaded jam. In the seventh, his coach felt he had also thrown well — even on the York homer to end the game.

“On the squeeze Zane read it well and he threw the ball up and in as designed and the kid on their team did a great job of just getting the bunt down — let alone keeping it fair,” Holmes said. “On the homer Zane pitched the ball up and away as we had called because we were worried about the squeeze and the lefty (York) literally lunged across the plate and extended his arms to get to it.

“I know he gets the loss, but I am not sure what more he could have done,” Holmes said.

Senior catcher Chris Davies had a forgetable final game, with a pair if costly errors — one in the sixth and one in the seventh innings. The tying run and winning run came on his miscues.

Davies threw behind a runner at first in the sixth inning and his errant thrown wound-up in right field instead. He had a similar miscue in the final inning.

Burroughs returned to the playoffs after missing for the first time in five years last season. The Indians were 12-14 overall — 9-5 and in fourth place in the Pacific League. Ventura is now 14-10.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Monday voted to award contracts totaling $81,179,000 to build the first phase of a Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (

RITC) at Bob Hope Airport that will bring Airport patrons and multiple transportation modes together at a single location with easy access to and from the passenger terminal.

The transportation center is scheduled to open in summer 2014.

“This is an important day for Bob Hope Airport. The RITC is the largest single capital project ever undertaken by the Authority, but more importantly, we believe it points the way toward a future marked by increased integration of the Airport into the very fabric of surface transportation in our region,” said Airport Authority President Don Brown.

“The RITC will enable people to have more choices of modes of transportation, public and private, to get to and from the Airport and help lessen traffic demand on nearby roadways. This is truly an example of increased efficiency and customer service contributing to sustainability in the long run,” Brown added.

View of Customer Service Building and Consolidated Rental Car Facility looking east from Empire Ave.

The RITC will be located along Empire Avenue, directly across from the Bob Hope Airport Train Station, and will include a three-level consolidated rental car facility; a rental car customer service building; a ground level bus transit station; and an elevated covered moving walkway to the terminal building. A separate parking structure will be built to replace auto parking spaces currently located on land that will become the site of the center.

The Authority will finance the project through multiple sources including General Airport Revenue Bonds, Passenger Facility Charges, Customer Facility Charges, Federal Grants, and Authority funds. On May 2, 2012, the Authority took advantage of a low interest rate environment for issuance of its 2012 Series Bonds and was able to lock in pricing of $82,165,000 in bonds at an effective rate of 5.64%. This low borrowing cost reduced the annual debt service to be paid by the Authority by approximately $1,250,000 from the project budget.

The Authority would like to acknowledge the efforts of its bond team – Citigroup, Public Resources Advisory Group, Ricondo & Associates, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, Richard Watson Gershon, Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth, and Copelan Consulting – in achieving these results.

McCarthy Building Companies was awarded a contract for $72,683,000 for the construction of the RITC and walkway, while Bomel Construction Company was the lowest responsive and responsible bidder for the replacement parking structure with a bid of $8,496,000. The Authority’s construction budget for the combined project components was $93 million.

A groundbreaking is planned for early July.

View of RITC from Hollywood and Empire Ave looking west

Upon completion in mid-2014, the RITC will provide seamless connectivity for airport passengers, train passengers, bus transit passengers, rental car customers, and bicyclists. In addition, because the structure is being placed on base isolators, users of the facility will be protected from the effects of a major seismic event, and the facility will have the capacity to serve as a command center for emergency operations.

Details about the project components are as follows:

Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC) – This 520,000 square foot structure will accommodate nine rental car brands (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National and Midway) currently serving Bob Hope Airport customers. The three-level Consolidated Rental Car Facility will provide easy access ready return space, quick turn-around maintenance bays, fueling and car wash capabilities on each level, as well as a customer service building.

A Bus Transit Facility will accommodate local and regional transit vehicles. The open air design will be the architectural feature of the structure complemented by 16 three-story art panels which will enhance the passers-by experience.

As a result of a partnership with the City of Burbank, solar panels generating about 1.5 megawatts of clean energy will be installed on top of the RITC, which is consistent with the City’s compliance with sustainable energy goals set for 2030.

Elevated Walkway – This 19-foot high covered elevated walkway will connect the RITC and the airport terminal with moving sidewalks that span 1,100 feet and allow for safe and efficient transport of airport passengers to the terminal and a ground transport center where off-airport shuttles will offer service to public transportation facilities such as the Burbank Metrolink Station and the North Hollywood Red Line Station. The transport center will also provide bicycle storage areas.

Replacement Parking Structure – This five-level facility will replace approximately 1,043 parking spaces that will be displaced by the combined footprints of the RITC and the Elevated Walkway.

Site Work – This element consists of underground utilities infrastructure work, relocations of wet and dry utilities, and hardscape and landscape work (the landscape plan is subject to final approval and acceptance by the Burbank City Council).

Off-Site Improvements – These improvements include the installation of new traffic signals, synchronization of traffic signals, a new pedestrian crosswalk and off-airport signage.

The Architect of Record for this project is Pierce Goodwin Alexander & Linville (PGAL) headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with offices in Los Angeles. Other Design Team members include Miyamoto International, PBS Engineers, John W. Cruikshank Consultants, Blymyer Engineers and Anil Verma Associates. The Program Manager is gkkworks/STV, with assistance from Del Richardson Associates, Elkin Construction Services, and Heritage Tree Films.

Notices to proceed are anticipated to be issued by June 1, 2012 with a 24-month construction schedule. An Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) is in place for the project and the management consultants are committed to SAFETY FIRST!
